چکیده

Abstract Objective Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors exhibit cognitive deficits. Research suggests that multilingualism can influence neurocognitive performance. We examined the effects of TBI and bilingualism/monolingualism on a test attention speed (i.e., Symbol Digit Modalities Test; SDMT). Method The sample consisted 55 healthy comparison (27 Spanish-English bilinguals; 28 English-monolinguals), 34 acute (14 23 27 chronic (13 12 English-monolinguals) participants. Acute participants were tested 6 months post-injury; or more post-injury. A series 3X2 ANOVAs conducted to determine effect language SDMT written oral Results revealed group outperformed both groups written, p = 0.000, ηp2 0.21. Also, oral, 0.13. Interaction emerged between bilingualism/monolingualism. On English-monolinguals meanwhile, bilinguals English-monolinguals, < 0.05, 0.09–0.10. Conclusion performed worse than adults tasks. Furthermore, demonstrated better abilities compared group. Relative monolinguals with TBI, our findings suggest recovery in bilingual Future studies larger sizes should examine if learning English first second impacts survivors’ performance English-monolingual survivors.

The Symbol Digit Modalities Test - Oral version: Italian normative data.

In neuropsychological practice, the availability of effective and reliable tests is crucial. The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) is widely used because it is easy to administer, reliable and also evaluates information processing speed. We set out to obtain normative data (currently unavailable for the Italian population) for the oral version of this test. Both age and education influenced p...

Validity of the Symbol Digit Modalities Test as a cognition performance outcome measure for multiple sclerosis

Cognitive and motor performance measures are commonly employed in multiple sclerosis (MS) research, particularly when the purpose is to determine the efficacy of treatment. The increasing focus of new therapies on slowing progression or reversing neurological disability makes the utilization of sensitive, reproducible, and valid measures essential. Processing speed is a basic elemental cognitiv...

Objective(s) Cytokines such as IL-1β are involved in inflammatory responses. This study evaluated the role of two different kinds of drugs (ibuprofen and celecoxib) on brain IL-10 and IL-1β after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in male rats. Materials and Methods Rats were assigned into 6 groups: intact, sham, TBI, and treated rats with vehicle, celecoxib or iboprophen. Cytokine concentrations ...

The Effects of Female Sex Steroids on Gastric Secretory Responses of Rat Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Objective(s) Gastric ulceration is induced by various forms of stress like surgery, ischemia and trauma. The female sex has more resistance to stress and the gastrointestinal lesions happen fewer than male sex. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of estradiol and progesterone on the gastric acid and pepsin levels following traumatic brain injury (TBI) induction. Materials and M...
